Easy High Protein Berry Smoothie Without Protein Powder for Busy Mornings

My daughter is always rushing in the morning and tends to miss breakfast, so I needed to figure out something she could actually have on the way out the door.

That’s how this smoothie became part of our morning routine.

I didn’t want to make her a smoothie that was just fruit. I wanted it to have some protein so it would be more filling and feel like a real breakfast instead of just a drink.

I also didn’t want to add protein powder. I wanted the protein to come from regular foods. The smoothie I make for her is creamy, easy to make, and most importantly, she can drink it in the car on the way to school.

My Easy High-Protein Berry Smoothie

Here’s what I use:

  • Frozen mixed berries
  • 1 banana
  • Almond milk
  • Yogurt
  • Almond butter

I don’t always measure everything exactly. I usually add the ingredients to the blender and adjust the almond milk depending on how thick the smoothie is.

The frozen berries make it cold and thick without needing ice, while the banana adds sweetness and makes the smoothie creamier.

Why I Add Protein to the Smoothie

A fruit smoothie is easy to make, but I wanted something that would be more filling for breakfast.

I also specifically wanted to avoid protein powder. There’s nothing wrong with using it if that’s your preference, but for this smoothie I wanted to get the protein from everyday foods instead.

That’s why I add yogurt, almond milk and almond butter.

The yogurt and almond butter add protein and also make the smoothie richer and creamier. The almond butter adds a little more staying power, which is especially helpful since this is often my daughter’s entire breakfast.

If you want even more protein, you could use a higher-protein yogurt, such as Greek yogurt.

How to Make the Smoothie

Add the frozen mixed berries, banana, almond milk, yogurt and almond butter to a blender.

Blend until smooth.

If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more almond milk and blend again.

If you want it thicker, start with less almond milk.

That’s really it.

It only takes a few minutes, which is exactly what I need on busy school mornings.

I Make It in My Costco Vitamix

I use my Vitamix that I bought at Costco, and one of my favorite things about it is that it came with a to-go tumbler.

We use that tumbler all the time for this smoothie.

It comes with a metal straw, which makes it easy for my daughter to drink the smoothie in the car.

I also really like that the tumbler has a screw-on lid.

It feels much more secure than a regular travel cup, and because the lid is leak-proof, I don’t have to worry as much about smoothie spilling all over the car.

That alone makes it worth using on rushed mornings.

Why This Smoothie Works for Busy Mornings

For us, the biggest advantage is convenience.

My daughter is much more likely to drink breakfast in the car than sit down and eat something before leaving the house.

This smoothie gives her fruit, some protein and something filling enough to get her through the morning.

And because everything goes straight into the blender, there’s very little prep.

It’s also easy to customize depending on what we have at home.

Easy Smoothie Variations

You can easily change this smoothie depending on what you like.

You could use:

  • Strawberries instead of mixed berries
  • Blueberries and banana
  • Greek yogurt for more protein
  • Regular milk instead of almond milk
  • Peanut butter or another nut butter instead of almond butter
  • More banana if you prefer a sweeter smoothie

You could also add a little cinnamon or vanilla if you want to change the flavor.

Can You Make This Smoothie Ahead of Time?

I prefer making it fresh because the texture is best right after blending.

But if my mornings are going to be hectic, I make the smoothie the night before. Then I store it in my Vitamix tumbler and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, I grab it from the fridge, give the smoothie a little stir and it’s ready to go.

My Favorite Breakfast on the Go

This has become one of my favorite solutions for mornings when my daughter would otherwise skip breakfast.

It takes just a few minutes to make, she can drink it in the car, and I like knowing that it’s not just a fruit smoothie.

I also like that I don’t need protein powder to make it more substantial. The yogurt, almond milk and almond butter give it natural protein from foods we already keep at home.

And using the Vitamix to-go tumbler keeps everything easy and mess-free.

For us, that combination makes this one of the easiest breakfasts for a busy morning.
